RICHARD LAUDER TOPS EXPERTS WITH 4-0 +540

1st Richard Lauder opened his night with his year’s highest game, a 596-316 game with Chris Vergeront. He played five bingos, ANISOLE, AVERTER, NUTTIER, TOUGHIES and a very luckily timed MESQUITE (MESQUITE itself tallied 134 points) in that game, on his way to a 4-0 +540 outing.

2nd Thomas Reinke finished in 2nd with his own unblemished 4-0 +210 score card. Thomas’s big game was his 447-404 game with Lynda Finn, his three bingoes MINGIER, DARIOLE and MOANERS trumping Lynda’s sole bingo JADEITE in that game.

3rd Charles Reinke finished 3rd with a 3-1 +36. Charles won a squeaker game 407-393 with Mark Kenas, his sole bingo FAGOTED overcoming Mark’s two bingos of MANIPLE and DOWNIEST. Charles sole loss was to Richard 369-474 as he was held to a single bingo (SOILURE) in that game.

BETTY HASSELKUS TOPS THE INTERMEDIATE FIELD

1st Betty Hasselkus finished in 1st at 3-1 +205 and earned a well deserved promotion to the Experts level with her healthy 377 per game average. Betty’s best score was in her 2nd game, a 473-277 win vs. Sue Goldstein. Betty’s bingoes there were JOLLIES and PANTIES.

2nd June Scott finished 2nd with 1-2 +14. June played two bingos (BOVINES, RAISINS) in her second game win vs. Expert Barb Besadny, winning with her high game of the year, a 392-344 final.

3rd Barbara Besadny finished 3nd with 1-3 -48 total. Barbara only had one playable bingo, OUTLINE in her 4 games this night, making it a mostly difficult slog through dozens of unproductive non-bingo racks.

17 scrabble players met at Attic Angels this week... Mary Becker was awarded the $4 prize for the highest “FI” play (in FINITO), Charles Reinke had the lowest N play, while the high IT was given out to Richard Lauder, and the final low O count went to Lynda Finn’s 9 point S play.

The word of the week, CRUMPET, was played by Chris Vergeront. Nice find!

Next week, KANAKA (n, Native Hawaiian, derogatory term) will provide the $4 verbal slights.

RICHARD LAUDER SQUEAKS THRU TO 4-0 +195

1st Richard Lauder just edged out Thomas Reinke 404-402 in their final game on his way to a 4-0 +195 top place in the experts. Richard opened that came with APRICOT, playing the easier word instead of the also good alternatives of adjectives of APROTIC or PAROTIC, as he and Thomas dueled their way to the two point difference, advantage Lauder at the end.

2nd Thomas Reinke finished in 2nd with 3-1 +293, starting the night off with a huge 567-421 win vs. his brother Charles. Thomas played bingoes of OVERSHY, SPARTINA, LATINIZE and ROULEAUS in that open salvo filled word game.

3rd Chris Vergeront finished 3rd with his own 3-1 +206 final tally. Chris’s big game was his 520-327 blowout with Karl Armstrong. Chris found and played bingoes of UGLIEST, STAGIER and RENVOIS in his big game.

BETTY HASSELKUS TOPS THE INTERMEDIATE FIELD

1st Betty Hasselkus finished in 1st at 4-0 +197. Betty’s high game was her 410-350 win vs. Harwinder Dowd, Betty played SEEMING as a bingo to aid her scoring efforts in that 3rd game of the night.

2nd Harwinder Dowd finished 2nd with 2-1 +113. Harwinder pulled off a tough win, getting 401 points to Aki Miura’s 271 total. Aki normally plays such a tightly controlled board, that it’s very hard to score as high as she did here. Harwinder played the bingo DARLING to nicely help her final total.

3rd Sue Goldstein finished 3nd with 2-2 and an even +100 cume. Her closest loss of the night came when she lost to Aki Miura 313-319 in a game both players completed without a bingo between them.

DENNIS LIEBHABER COMMENTS HIS WAY TO 1st WITH 4-0 +187

1st Dennis Liebhaber put in a rare but certainly not quiet appearance as he “sweet talked” his opponents while outscoring them all on his way to a 4-0 +187 record. Dennis’s high game was his opener, a 452-415 battle with Helen Flores. Dennis’s 2nd bingo, the phony DITTOES, help provide the scoring edge he needed to win that game.

2nd Charles Reinke finished in 2nd with 3-1 +217 again this week. Charles drew Chris Vergeront as his opponent in his opening game, and edged out a win with bingoes of CORDIALS and VEALIEST helping him to a 401-331 victory.

3rd Richard Lauder finished 3rd with a 3-1 +91 spread. Richard’s big game was a 516-355 luck-box game in which he played FLIRTING as a 158 triple-triple using Thomas Reinke’s first “L” from Thomas’s own bingo of LORDLIER.

SUE GOLDSTEIN TOPS IN INTERMEDIATE FIELD

1st Sue Goldstein finished in 1st at 3-1 -79. Sue only loss was a big one cume score wise, as she lost 322-443 in that game. Sue did play NASTIEST as a bingo there…maybe not so much a hidden “message” to her fine opponent, Helen Flores?

2nd Harwinder Dowd finished 2nd with a 1-2 -78 record. Harwinder did break the “phony ice” for the Intermediates when in her second game she got away with UNSOLVE while besting June Scott 365-296. That play of the phony word, UNSOLVE, marked the very 1st phony by an Intermediate this year. Many expert players break the “phony ice” quite frequently…it’s all part of the game for them.

3rd June Scott finished 3rd with a 0-3 -59 record, her nearest loss coming from her 348-403 game with Leslie Seltzer. June played the bingo BEARING in that opening game.
