Charles Reinke Averages 522 a Game, Unsurprisingly Wins All of Them

1st Charles Reinke went 4-0 +833.  His lowest game for the night, 491, was higher than anybody else's high game.  His 13 bingos also easily coronated him as Bingo King, with words such as MAIDENLY, QUAGMIRE, and YAUPONS being the jewels in his crown.  Two of his games featured four bingos: his 550-322 against Betty Hasselkus and his 539-296 victory over a groggy, jetlagged, and Mountain-Dew-deprived Andy Bohnsack.

2nd Thomas Reinke, as the only player with three wins, attained second place in the experts with his 3-1 +112 record, despite a paltry (for him) five bingos.  Gail Salm beat Thomas for the second straight week, winning that round one matchup 437-404.  Thomas got down UREDINIA and MARTINS to Gail's JOUSTING and TENAILS.  He also played the word of the week, TOCCATA, when he beat an under-caffeinated Andy Bohnsack 460-418.  A toccata (plural TOCCATAS or TOCCATE) is a virtuosic composition usually for organ.

3rd Out of eight people with a 2-2 record, Peter Schmiedicke ended up at the top of the pile with his +72 cumulative.  He suffered a rare defeat at the hands of Helen Flores, 340-463, but regained most of that spread in a 475-272 demolition of Richard Lauder.  Peter got down GERMANE, MANORIAL, and DISSECT while Richard was able to play SNOBBISH.

Point Spread the Only Difference Between First and Last Place in Intermediates

1st Sue Goldstein went 2-2 +62, getting one bingo down (AMOUNTS) in her high game of the night, a 376-315 win against June Scott.

2nd June Scott went 2-2 with a predictable -62 spread.  She prevailed in a high-scoring 383-371 game against Sue Goldstein.

Its everyone has a shot night, with the top 4 players (Charles, Mark, Thomas, Andy) all absent.

For the experts:

Richard Lauder placed first finishing 4-1, +280, winning the first four straight until bumping into Lynda and almost taking her down as well. His high bame was 452 against Barb.

Mary Becker placed second finishing 4-1, -4. Its unusual to go 4-1 and still wind up with negative cume, but all of Mary's games were close, so that 74 point defeat that Richard handed her was enough to swallow her spread from her close games with Peter, Helen, Gail and Shayla.

Lynda Finn finished third with a 3-1, +62. Gail handed her her only loss which occurred just before the great diet pepsi spill of 2013. Lynda was bingo queen with 7 valid bonuses.

Helen played the only valid bingos containing the letter Y, ROYALIST and UNRHYMED. For this combo she is awarded word of the week honors. ROYALIST has an anagram. Can you find it?

Harwinder Dowd went 2-1 to top the field

Charles Reinke Takes First...Again...

1st Charles Reinke continued his recent trend of titanic spreads, going a perfect 4-0 with a spread of +645.  He averaged a staggering 484 points per game while only allowing 323 on average.  Out of all his opponents, only Richard Lauder was able to put the fear of the tiles into him: that game ended 411-381, with one bingo apiece - EULOGIES for Charles and WADDIES for Richard (WADDY is a verb meaning "to strike with a thick club").  Charles' high game was a 562 against Gail Salm, featuring the bingos GUANASE, UPSTARE, and HORNETS (all good bingos to know, as they are quite high-probability).  UPSTARE anagrams to PASTURE, UPTEARS, and UPRATES, while HORNETS anagrams to SHORTEN and THRONES.

2nd Bryan Benwitz overcame a rough start, losing his first game 306-408 against Peter Schmiedicke but winning his next three to finish 3-1 +313.  It is interesting to note that the bingo deities only saw fit to give Bryan the chance to play seven-letter bingos - his one eight-letter attempt, TEMPORAS, turned out to be phony (it is a creative mashup of the words TEMPORAL and TEMPURAS).  Bryan achieved his second-highest club game ever when he beat Richard Lauder 545-252, pummeling our poor club director with words such as SPLURGE, URINOSE, and LENDERS.

3rd Peter Schmiedicke also went 3-1, with a smaller spread of +118, to grab third place in the expert division.  He saved his best for last, dropping a 500 game on Mary Becker, 501-372.  Peter landed DISRATED, BOSSIEST, and AGENTED while Mary hit DEPLORED.  Thomas Reinke proved to be his downfall, as he lost that matchup 311-505 despite the opening-play bingo ELUANTS.

Honorable mention to Thomas Reinke for almost scoring 600.  He fell one point short of that mark when he beat Mary Becker 599-325.  He had four bingos: GAIETIES, POLITEST, a 3x3 OVERMINE, and word-of-the-week ANTHELIX (defined as "the inner curved ridge on the cartilage of the external ear").  As part of fate's continuing agenda against the Reinke brothers, Charles Reinke also played the word OVERMINE in the same round, but didn't get nearly as many points for it.  He probably should have played VOMERINE to avoid the twin jokes.  Richard Lauder also got a triple-triple of his own: INGRATES for 140 points against Helen Flores.

Sue Goldstein Triumphs in Quadruple-Header

1st Sue Goldstein played four games against regular opponent June Scott, the series ending 3-1 in Sue's favor.  All of the games were close: her biggest win was 346-300.
